The year 2049 is not a good time to be an individualist. At that point in the dismal future, a tiny proportion of the populace lives in the “Claves,” privileged residences whose safety is guaranteed by armies of private guards. Another 2% lives in the Semi–Claves, reasonably safe homes for those who actually have company jobs. The rest are consigned to life in the Grids. Here, crime and despair are the order of the day. The only escape is euthanasia—for which the mandatory age is constantly lowered.

As the government declares another crackdown on the mutants and undesirables, a “Clave” member named Kaine Salinger gathers a band of outcasts to challenge the government’s tyranny. A mutant herself with the power to wither any living thing, she locates Shock, a mutant with electrical powers; Queeg, a man cursed to never die, and B.D., a former Slaughter Bowl champ. These “Outcasts” join together to take on the system that spurned them.
