The Gunwitch: Outskirts of Doom

Readers familiar with Dan Brereton’s The Nocturnals have seen these characters awaken at nightfall to protect the innocent, when sunny Pacific City undergoes its nightly horrific transformation into Peril City. But what happens when two of these characters venture beyond the city limits?

The Gunwitch and his teammate Eve come across a tiny burg where rival vampire gangs are staging a turf war that’s costing the town its human population. The scarecrow-like gunfighter infiltrates one of the gangs with the hopes of eliminating bloodshed.

While doing nothing new for the vampires-as-punks genre, Brereton’s tight storytelling and unique protagonist make for an interesting intro to the series. The story comes together nicely and can be picked up easily by non-Nocturnals readers.

Naifeh’s traditional panel layouts also help ease the story along, and his style is free from the overuse of blackness and shadows that are standard fare for many horror comics.

Recommended for fans of gothic-style horror, even for those not fans of Brereton’s previous work.
