Reign of the Zodiac

In epic fantasy, the reader usually has a catalog of exposition to plod through before he’s allowed to proceed to the actual story — and Reign of the Zodiac is guilty of that to the nth degree.

The entire first issue just sets up this universe’s background, and, no matter how popular this sort of postmodern meticulous plotting (“Don’t worry; it’ll read better in the collection.”) has become, it frequently has readers pounding the arms of their chair screaming, “Cut to the chase!”

But Keith Giffen and Colleen Doran, two creators you wouldn’t think would make for a “dream team,” make it work on just about every level. This is a beautiful, well-realized, thoroughly convincing fantasy that will leave the audience hungry for more; let’s hope DC will have the patience to keep it going until it finds the readership it deserves.
