The Unfunnies (Mark Millar’s…)

Well, gosh, this is certainly unnecessary. I’d call it an empty exercise in depravity, except, of course, that’s the point (unless there’s an wholly unexpected third issue twist that’s beyond my ken). The OK, if paradoxically rather lifeless, “funny-animal” art creates a flat anthropomorphized animal world that’s periodically invaded by a Photoshopped bearded human that I think the reader is supposed to assume is the author himself, who gleefully introduces the formerly innocent denizens to such concepts as child pornography and prison rape.

Oddly enough, the main trouble with something like this isn’t the supposed “outrageousness” of the subject matter so much as the fact that it tries desperately hard to either outrage or amuse and fails to do either. Millar is a talented writer, but this is the embodiment of an empty intellectual exercise, wallowing in college-level “humor” and existentialism. Here’s proof positive that some scripts deserve to be kept on a shelf.
