King Kong (Monster)
(Monster, 1991)
©1990 Donald Simpson and Richard Merian Cooper. Cover ©1990 Dave Stevens and Richard Merian Cooper.
The archetypical story of a giant ape and the people who try to use him, receives an excellent adaptation by Don Simpson (Megaton Man), in this six-part series from Monster Comics.
Beginning with a stunning cover by the incomparable Dave Stevens (Rocketeer), the narrative maintains an air of mystery and suspense even though the primary elements of this classic are all but common knowledge. This is an adaptation of the 1932 book, consequently there is more depth than one might expect had the source been either of the two movie versions. Although Simpson’s style serves him better for the depiction of people than for a giant ape, the black-and-white artwork is clean and expressive with a strong Will Eisner (The Spirit) influence.
