The Legend of Drizzt Book I.

Dungeons & Dragons geeks likely are happy to see this book, considered a classic in the Forgotten Realms canon, come to comic book format. It tells the origins of the Realm’s arguably biggest character, Drizzt Do’Urden, a Drow elf whose destiny is, well, epic. (Or so one hopes, given the number of books written about the character.)

This first issue of the three-issue first installment of the three-book Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore boils down the first book, Homeland, into approximately 130 pages. In parts one and two, the creators portray the difficult and unforgiving life of the Drow, as the many houses—most certainly including House Do’Urden—use violence and subterfuge, usually in tandem, to advance their selfish causes. Out of this milieu comes Drizzt, who is learning his place in the world as a very un-Drowlike member of his society.

Superb coloring is the highlight of the fine art, and the story is paced well, especially considering the task of working a novel into three comics. One need not be a D&D fan to pick up this series and enjoy it.
