Thrilling Crime Cases
(Star Publications, 1950-1952)
™ and ©1950 Star Publications
Series continued from 4Most #40, continues as Shocking Mystery Cases #50
Star Publications bought Novelty Publications in the late 1940s and transformed its lineup of second-tier titles into some of the most lurid and sensationalistic comics ever published. Thrilling Crime Cases, formerly 4Most Comics, was a good example. Notably brutal and violent even for the crime-comic genre, Thrilling Crime Cases featured stories of graphic sadism and depravity, with little of the pseudo-sociological moralizing that took place in some of the other popular crime books. But what really made Thrilling Crime Comics jump off the racks was the cover artwork of L. B. Cole. Cole’s visceral style and intense, Day-Glo poster coloring were light-years ahead of the design sense of other titles and are the principal attraction for collectors today.
