Fat and Slat
(E.C., 1947-1948)
™ and © William M. Gaines, Agent
Fat and Slat were the “stage” names of two characters newspaper comic-strip artist Ed Wheelan had created for his Minute Movies strip, which ran in the 1920s and 1930s—though the “actors” Fuller Phun and Archibald Clubb” didn’t appear as Fat and Slat until the Golden Age Flash comic book ran a Wheelan strip. The Minute Movies strip imitated movie types of the day, with feature films followed by short subjects, and its “cast” of actors (Hazel Dearie, Ralph McSneer, and the like) were cast in a variety of roles. The first issue Wheelan did for comic books appeared from DC’s AA arm in 1944.
When the E.C. imprint was begun, Wheelan continued the comic book for that company, with the characters continuing in “bigfoot” comedy routines. In the morphing world that E.C. developed, the title turned into Gunfighter with the fifth issue.
