The Sandman

There have been at least three major characters who called themselves “Sandman” in DC’s history. The first, Golden Age Sandman was Wesley Dodds, a crimefighter armed with a gas gun which put evildoers to sleep. Dodds is featured in modern days in Sandman Mystery Theatre.

The Sandman best known to today’s readers is Morpheus, god of dreams. He appears in Neil Gaiman’s masterful title Sandman.

In between these two great Sandmen was the Sandman that appears in this relatively obscure title of the mid-70s. Here, Sandman is a caped super-hero of sorts, whose job it is to protect the “dream-stream” from evil forces. He has the ability to monitor any sleeper’s dreams and enter them as necessary. He can also sprinkle sand to bring on sleep in humans. This title featured the art of the great Jack Kirby, but nevertheless folded after just six issues.
