Wally the Wizard

    (Star, 1985-1986)
Star

Wally is an apprentice to the great wizard Marlin—not Merlin, mind you: Marlin doesn’t believe in most of that sorcerous poppycock that his brother Merlin goes for. Marlin’s really more of a scientist, although his apprentice is still fascinated by all things magical.

Wally is a good-hearted sort who befriends dragons and always lends a hand to those in need. Although not a great wizard yet, he uses his bravery and ingenuity to save the kingdom from all manner of nasties, such as the nefarious Vastar the Vile and his mechanized locusts.

This whimsical series was one of the few original Marvel creations that was featured in its Star line of children’s comics. (Most others, such as Visionaries or Foofur were licensed from TV cartoon shows.) Wally the Wizard ran for a dozen issues, concluding in 1986.
