The Wretch (Vol. 2)

    (Amaze Ink, 1997-1998)
™ and ©1997 Phil Hester

A mute shadowy figure who leaps to the aid of those in need, the Wretch began as the Creep when Phillip Hester was with Caliber Comics. The name changed and they have since moved to the Amaze Ink branch of Slave Labor Graphics. Caliber Comics published almost two hundred pages of The Wretch in many issues of Negative Burn and a four-issue series of his own in 1996-1997.

The Wretch is a silent figure of justice and help to those who may need it. This black and white has been nominated for the Eisner Award for best new series and deservedly so. Hester’s ability to express his hero’s moods and words in the shape of the eyes or the wave of the hair (and we assume it is hair) is tremendous. The villains are bizarre and unique, as are the methods used to combat them by the Wretch.
