Hawkmoon: The Sword of the Dawn

    (First, 1987-1988)
™ and ©1987 First Comics, Inc. and Star*Reach Productions

A gift from the evolved inhabitants of Soryandum allows young duke Dorian Hawkmoon to move his beloved city into another dimension, far from the evil reach of the Dark Empire of Granbretan, which has claimed the rest of the world.

But when a drunken playwright shows up near the river, claiming to have learned the secret of dimensional travel from a master philosopher, Hawkmoon senses danger. He and trusty companion D’Averc must sneak back into the very heart of the empire and try to discover how much its immortal, corrupt ruler has learned about travel between the spaces.

Scripted by Roger Salick with art by Rafael Kayanan, this was the third of three limited series adapting History of the Runestaff, a novel by influential fantasy author Michael Moorcock. The first part was presented in The Jewel in the Skull, and the second in The Mad God’s Amulet.

In all, this is a tight, smooth adaptation of one of the more adventure-filled novels in Moorcock’s eternal champion cycle.
