This title adeptly combined horror with romance, a classic combination, as lovers of Gothic romance are aware. Each story is a period piece set in the 19th or early 20th century. Typical of the stories is “The Vanishing Wreck,” in which a fisherman has a premonition of a beautiful woman’s drowning—leading him to save her from that fate when he meets her shortly afterward in real life. In another tale “Sleep, My Love” a young woman’s fiancé unwittingly helps her fiendish mistress possess her body.
