Silver Age: Dial H for Hero
(DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics
In DC’s Silver Age crossover event, the intergalactic villain Agamemno, at one time the ruler of the entire universe, has swapped the minds of the Justice League of America with those of their greatest villains. The villains-in-the-heroes-bodies are sent to seek the keys to universal domination, while the JLA must evade the law. Meanwhile, many of DC’s long-lost Silver Age characters must rise to the occasion to help protect Earth in the JLA’s absence. Thus, the stage is set for the return of Robby Reed, keeper of an alien device (that looks suspiciously like an old telephone rotary dial). When Reed dials H-E-R-O, he instantly becomes any one of 1,000 different super-heroes. In this one-shot, Reed goes up against the renegade J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter. The encounter is a nice touch by writer Mark Waid (Flash, Empire), since both characters were at one time stars of the 1960s House of Mystery. Although the battle ends in predictable fashion, the story is a clever set-up for the conclusion of the Silver Age crossover, which occurs in Silver Age 80-Page Giant #1.
