Tangent Comics/The Atom

“The Only Thing You Know is the Names” was the tag line that promoted the Tangent imprint from DC Comics in the summer of 1997. Unlike the Amalgam experiment which melded DC and Marvel characters, the intent this time was to create an entirely new character from a familiar name.

The Atom in the Tangent Universe is Adam Thompson who is the third hero to have that title, carrying on from his father and grandfather. His density-altering powers are the result of radiation experiments that were conducted on his grandfather. A significant difference in the Tangent Universe is the escalation of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, which resulted in the nuclear destruction on the southeast coast of the U.S. The first Atom played a prominent role in those events, and the truth of his involvement is something that haunts him still, and from which he hopes to spare his grandson.
