Avengeblade
(Maximum, 1996)
™ and ©1996 Rob Liefeld, Inc.
Beware of publishers who claim to parody their own titles. Often, the parodies are softball “spoofs” which hardly scratch the comic surface, and lack the guts to truly skewer their prey.
That’s why it’s such a refreshing surprise to read Avengeblade. An obvious takeoff on Witchblade and Avengelyne, this title delights in eviscerating virtually every silly super-hero in the Image universe—including those of Rob Liefeld’s own studio. It’s not a good-natured ribbing, either—characters are mocked for their derivative nature, their poor sales, and even the ego of their creators. This “hit ’em where it counts” parodying is exactly what the genre needs, and makes Avengeblade an unexpectedly enjoyable read.
