Hard Rock Comics is a collection of rock biographies in the style of Revolutionary Comics’ Rock ‘n’ Roll Comics. Each issue tells the story of a well-known rock band, with writers Jay Allen Sandford and Todd Loren striking a good balance between getting the “inside scoop” and dishing out dirt on the stars. In general, these are stories about how the bands overcame the odds to rise to the top of the heap. Troubles like drug abuse and professional burnout are dealt with honestly and without sensationalism. Still, the writers are not above occasional nastiness—especially regarding Tipper Gore and the P.M.R.C.

To its credit, Hard Rock Comics doesn’t limit itself to covering the traditional guitar-heavy metal groups. Hard rockers like Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Motley Cruë take their turns in the spotlight, but they share it with issues such as “The Birth of New York Punk,” or a profile on funk pioneer George Clinton.
