Rio Conchos
(Gold Key, 1964)
™ and ©1964 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
Rio Conchos adapts the 1964 Gordon Douglas western starring Richard Boone. Set on the Texas-Mexico border in the years following the Civil War, Rio Conchos weaves the typical western motifs of outlaws and Indians into a complex tale that raises issues of prejudice, politics, and unresolved historical conflicts (Union vs. Confederate, U.S. vs. Mexico, Euro-American settlers vs. Indians, poor whites vs. freed slaves, and the lingering spirit of Texas nationalism). This uncommonly ambitious story is delineated in an energetic and personal style (by the unfortunately anonymous artist) not often seen in the formulaic Gold Key/Dell movie adaptations. Altogether, Rio Conchos exceeds the expectations of the genre.
