Ultraverse Year Zero: The Death of The Squad

™ and ©1995 Malibu Comics Entertainment, Inc.

Before the Strangers, Freex, Prime, or any of the other “ultra-heroes” appeared in Malibu’s Ultraverse, there existed a group of super-heroes known as the Squad. This four-issue mini-series tells of how the first of the Ultraverse’s heroes came to be, and how, not long afterward, they would meet their doom at the hands of the Ultraverse’s first major super-villain, NM-E.

Set in Southern California, the story began when actor Tom Hawke, shopclerk Linda Warren, aspiring rapper Jamal Blass, and mechanic Carlos Jimenez were suddenly struck by mysterious energies. Overnight, they discovered that they possessed awesome new abilities: Tom (Hardcase) became super-strong, Linda could fire energy blasts, Jamal found he could explode objects at will, and Carlos could make them move with his mind. They became the Squad hoping it would make them rich. Instead, it would lead all but one to their death.
