Marvel set out to stretch the bounds of what a comic could be when it introduced Marvel Preview, a comic magazine that consisted of adult-oriented stories featuring a number of familiar and new characters. In its black-and-white, magazine format, it could reach out to a whole new group of readers and approach issues that might be too risky for the traditional comic book medium. As a result, the writers got a chance to create some terrific stories.

One of these early stories told how an ex-marine named Frank Castle barely survived when his family was murdered by mobsters. In that historic origin story (which appeared in Marvel Preview #2), we see for the first time the origin of the man now known as the Punisher. Marvel Preview also contained the origins or early appearances of such greats as Dominic Fortune, Star-Lord, Kull the Conqueror, and Moon Knight. With #25, Marvel Preview switched names to become Bizarre Adventures.
