The Fourth World Gallery

When Jack Kirby produced his Fourth World saga for DC in the early 1970s, reactions were decidedly mixed. Fans of the “King” were blown away by the cosmic saga of the New Gods of New Genesis, led by Orion, and their battles with the evil minions of Darkseid of Apokolips—battles that sprawled over four titles (The New Gods, The Forever People, Mister Miracle and Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen) that featured some of the finest art of Kirby’s career. But DC management discontinued the ambitious saga after 18 months, and it remains comics’ great “unfinished symphony,” despite the efforts of other creators, including Kirby himself, to conclude the storyline.

The latest to try his hand at reviving the Fourth World is John Byrne, a specialist in reworking other creators’ ideas. The Gallery special presents his renditions of the characters, plus those of other contemporary artists who were obviously inspired by Kirby’s awesome vision.
