“It’s thrilling because it’s true!” “Every case taken from real life!” These were the promises that Justice, one of Marvel’s early crime comics made to its readers. Formerly an innocuous humor title named Wacky Duck, Justice was born when Marvel publisher Martin Goodman caught on to the national interest in crime comics and decided to adopt his usual strategy of saturating the market with similar titles.

The stories themselves were the usual lurid affairs, with stories such as “Dead or Alive!” and “Thicker than Water,” full of brazen criminals and plodding policemen. Many were written by a young up-and-comer, Stan Lee, and illustrated by the likes of Russ Heath, George Tuska, and George Wildey.
