Periphery
(Arch-Type, 1998)
™ and © 1998 Dreamriders Workshop
Described as a collection of stories that haunt the periphery of consciousness, this anthology title attempted to appeal to a variety of tastes. “Lore,” “The Hacker Boy” and “Quack, Duck of Doom” (which in style and execution, seems inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) are all light and humorous. “The Trashman” and “Dead Man’s Date” have the requisite twist ending, but “Dead Dolls,” a crime story featuring a psychic cop and his partner on the trail of a child serial killer, displays a real sense of pacing and storytelling acumen.
Unfortunately the first issue was the only one for this ambitious title.
— George Haberberger
