Magic: The Gathering: Gerrard’s Quest

Magic: The Gathering was a collectible card game that single-handedly launched a new genre in gaming. It was such a mighty success that many comic stores found a large part of their revenue suddenly shifted to eager gamers snatching up packs of Magic cards. It was not surprising that Magic: The Gathering eventually worked its way to comic books, with a number of Magic series enjoying mixed success at Voyager (Acclaim) under their Armada imprint.

In 1998, Dark Horse picked up the Magic comics, launching this new series written by Mike Grell (Green Arrow). This hard-to-follow title follows a group of adventurers out to reclaim some vague “legacy” from the Lords of the Wastes. Gerald, the key figure in this struggle, is a reluctant messiah. Although he’s been schooled since birth to fulfill his destiny, he would just as soon let history pass him by. Only the love of endangered friends makes him press on.
