Judge Dredd has long been a star of British comics, appearing in countless stories for 2000 A.D., Judge Dredd Megazine, and other titles. In 1994, this legendary lawman finally made his way across the Atlantic to appear in this ongoing series from DC.

Admittedly, DC takes some liberties with Dredd. For one, the series begins in the year 2045, mere years into the era of the mega-cities and the judge system (where police were given extraordinary power to arrest and sentence criminals in response to unbelievable crime rates). Furthermore, this Dredd is…dare we say it…a bit Americanized. DC’s version shows him “stretching the law in order to catch crooks” and smarting off to fellow officers, whereas the British Dredd would never dream of these things. There are also a significant number of crooked police in DC’s rendition—another thing Dredd could never tolerate.
