This is a story of racism and class war set in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The principal characters are: Dyltah, a woman genetically altered to allow her to withstand the vacuum of space; Saa, a sentient asteroid; members of the Pod Colony, the community that Dyltah spurned to become a drifter in the void; and the Jovians, humans altered to withstand Jupiter’s harsh environment. The Jovians are hated by the members of the Pod Colony, who are fiercely xenophobic and value their genetic purity beyond all reason. But their colony is inadequately shielded and consequently they have developed an abundance of tumors. Their intolerance toward anyone different than themselves is an ironic denial of their own subtle mutations.
