Bubba the Redneck Werewolf
(Brass Ball, 2003-2004, 2006)
™ and © 2004 Brass Ball Comics
Creator Mitch Hyman sees a lot wrong with the comics industry. But rather than let bitterness or anger turn him into a werewolf, as it did his creation, he finds a more creative and relatively harmless outlet for his feelings. Like making his own comic book. And in this one, with a hilarious Southern-fried dose of slams, jabs, and Bill Gaines-style gags, he skewers the very nexus of the comics industry: the big summertime multi-media convention.
For all its satire and barbs, though, Bubba the Token Lead Character could just as easily be Elvis, The Easter Bunny, or Sammy the Sex-Crazed Sumo Wrestler. His actions are the catalyst that launches all of the issue’s craziness, but Hyman doesn’t utilize any traits that are unique to his character. In fact, Hyman’s theme-driven story leaves virtually no room for character development. This would be a crying shame, if the story weren’t so doggone funny.
For the record, Bubba is a decidedly politically incorrect werewolf who lives up to his name. He’s a perpetually angry, Southern-born, beer-drinkin’, girl-chasin’, monster truck-drivin’ tough guy whose origin is brilliantly and remarkably simple: In Hyman’s words, he was “a dogcatcher who caught the wrong dog.” It’s to be hoped that Hyman will expand on this in future issues; at the very least, his biting wit will still entertain. Grab a Coors and pork rinds and enjoy.
