Based upon L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll’s original books, writer Ben Avery has brought the girls of each story to life as young women in a modern day conglomeration. Dorothy (“Dee”) and Alice are friends who haven’t quite left their childhood fantasy lands behind, and have become torn between three worlds: Oz, Earth and Wonderland. A wicked witch has seized control of Oz, and has a discovered a source of power in a poem called “The Jabberwock” which she hopes will aid in her conquest over the three realms. The young heroines must defeat the newest witch in Oz before she unlocks the poem in which the Jabberwock is caged. The vibrant illustrations by Casey Heying pop off the page with just the right amount of whimsy blended with realism.

From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:

Will this series never start in earnest? We’ve been teased with the same cover art in The Art of Greg Horn (who is the cover artist, natch), the Oz/Wonderland Preview book, and now this #0 issue. OK, we get it already! It’s a nice painting!

But the story is now just gearing up. Dorothy hasn’t shown up yet, but plenty of other characters—including Ruggedo the Nome King, Jack Pumpkinhead, and The Cheshire Cat—are on hand, modernized but true to their source material.

Half the issue is sketches and scripts—you know, the usual zero issue filler. But one thing is of interest: Dorothy and Alice apparently have three roommates, one of whom is Susie. She is described as having outgrown her fantasy world, leaving childhood behind for adulthood. You know who that sounds like? Susan Pevensie, one of the children who enter the fantasy in The Chronicles of Narnia.

We’ve got Oz books out the wazoo, and Wonderland is not exactly virgin territory, either. But Narnia? Aside from a parody in Simpsons Comics, Narnia may be untouched by the comics medium. Now, with the movie coming? Bring it on!
