Bob Marley, Tale of the Tuff Gong
(Marvel, 1994)
™ and © Bob Marley Music, Inc.
Rastafarian musician Bob Marley is revered by a certain type across cultures, drawn by his political activism and dream of a peaceful, just future, all told to the world through music. This series in three parts—Iron, Lion and Zion—tells Marley’s story and that of the Jamaican people, with his song lyrics dropped in for effect. Though some might call it biased, it is an authorized bio of sorts, and very well done. And if you’re wondering about the roots of Rastafarianism, book one, Iron, provides a fairly accurate separate short story at the end.
The roster of contributors to the project include writer Charles E. Hall, cartoonist Peter Kuper, and artists Gene Colan and Mort Todd.
