Kolchak: Tales of the Night Stalker
(Moonstone, 2003-2004)
™ and ©2003 Jeff Rice and Dave Ulanski
The Night Stalker is a concept that refuses to die. In some ways a precursor to the monster and conspiracy TV show, the X-Files, this comic book adaptation of the 70s TV cult favorite stars investigative reporter Carl Kolchak, as an amateur monster hunter whose encounters with myriad fiends and supernatural threats are always met by an apathetic public and a skeptical editor.
Years after the show’s cancellation, Kolchak made his way into comics with a series of one-shots from Moonstone. When those stories proved that there was still an audience for the hapless reporter, Kolchak graduated into his own ongoing series. In Kolchak: tales of the Night Stalker, Kolchak bumbles his way through a series of mysteries, angering as many authority figures as possible along the way. In the end there is no proof of his strange findings, but readers and Kolchak alike know that the Night Stalker has solved yet another supernatural mystery, dispatching horrors from vampires to voodoo chieftains.
