The Lone Ranger’s Companion Tonto

    (Dell, 1951-1958)
™ and ©1957 The Lone Ranger, Inc.

Although there are several versions of his origin story, the first states that as a boy, Tonto was wounded by renegade Indians and left for dead. Luckily, a young John Reid stumbled across him and nursed him back to health. From that point on, they became fast friends. Reid later became a Texas Ranger, and when his troop was ambushed by outlaws and Reid was left for dead, his old friend Tonto appeared to return the favor done him years earlier.

With the outlaws thinking Reid was dead, Reid decided to don a mask and ride out as the The Lone Ranger. Tonto, his faithful friend, rode with him and the two became legends of books, radio, and the silver screen.

In this 1951 series, Tonto at last got a comic of his own, where he tried to help keep the peace between farmers, ranchers, and Indians in the Old West.
