Adam Toshima was born with the uncanny ability to sense others’ feelings. Sadly, his face had been horribly scarred in a fire as a child, and he grew up as a literal circus freak in Professor Light’s traveling circus. The depraved Professor owned the mystical Cloak of Dionysus, whose cloth is woven of stolen souls (à la Ragman) and which give him the ability to change his form at will.

One day, Toshima watched as the Professor robbed, then began to rape a defenseless widow. Toshima sprang to her aid, and in the struggle he managed to tear off a portion of the robe before the Professor struck him down. That portion became a sentient mask which allowed Toshima to change his face to any form he desired, and gave him the chance to become a defender of the weak. But it also demanded sustenance from Toshima—in the form of souls stolen from his victims.
