John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke had the perfect, 1990s idea for a super-hero with the creation of “Major Bummer.” The title character is Lou Martin, the archetypal slacker teen who spent most of his life playing video games and loafing in front of the TV. Then came the fateful day he opened a strange package that had been left on his doorstep by an unknown party. There was a blinding flash of light, Lou was knocked unconscious…and when he woke up, he had been transformed from a gangly teen into a super-heroic hunk.

The next day, Lou was unaware of the changes in him—even after he zoned out while fixing a VCR and accidentally turned it into a futuristic ray gun. The revelation came when he foiled a holdup at the local convenience store while going on a munchie run to feed his suddenly ravenous appetite. Like so many events in this series, the comedy comes from Lou’s utter apathy in the face of extraordinary events.
