Death Rattle (Vol. 3)

    (Kitchen Sink, 1995-1996)
Cover (“The Probability Chamber”) ©1995 Mark Schultz. Other contents © their respective creators

Probably the best and truest thing that can be said about Death Rattle is that it doesn’t read like every other horror anthology out there. Its publishers, Kitchen Sink, bill it as a welcome return to social and psychological horror as seen in such EC titles as Tales From the Crypt. For better or worse, however, the series just doesn’t come off that way.

Now in its third incarnation, it features talented creators like Mark Schultz (Cadillacs & Dinosaurs) and Tim Eldred (Grease Monkey), giving them a chance to do their own thing while letting readers enjoy their first class artwork. The writing, however, comes off as a set of interesting “B-sides”—quirky and inventive, but never really hitting its stride.
