When a group of hippies use an ancient jade figure to call up a demon, their naivete costs them dearly. Since one of them, Nirvana Freebreeze, had been a passing acquaintance of private eye, Sugah Rollins, his involvement is a safe bet. Rollins describes himself as a “playboy, raconteur, daredevil, adventurer and lover.” He is also a big pain in the neck to Lieutenant Holloran who has little patience with Sugah’s constant intrusion in police matters. Nevertheless, such criticisms bounce harmlessly off of Rollins whose ego makes him oblivious to such concerns.

Rollins wears gold chains, shirts with wide collars, bell-bottoms and a big Afro. But of course: it is 1976. Published in 2001, this period piece evokes the black exploitation films of the 1970s like Shaft and Superfly, but the passage of a quarter century lends a definite farcical mood to the narrative.
