Deep 3D Comix

    (Kitchen Sink, 1970)
™ and ©1970 Krupp Comic Works, Inc.

Ouch! Deep 3D Comix, the one-shot humor title from Krupp Comic Works, is a headache to read…literally! Drawn and lettered in a style reminiscent of Robert Crumb, the entire issue is printed in the offset red and blue ink used for 3D layering. Using the provided glasses doesn’t make the experience any easier, although it does help some of the images burst out of their respective panels.

Artwork aside, Deep 3D Comix is made up of 22 separate stories, the largest of which is a mere six pages long. With each penned by a different author, the underground title heralds back to the day when “co-op” publishing houses created anthology books. Relying heavily on bathroom humor and childish sexual innuendo, the bulk of the stories focus on drugs and the drug culture. Definitely an “Adults Only” title, Deep 3D Comix plays into the stereotype that leaps to the mind of the non-comic reader when he or she hears the words “self-published.”
