E. C. Segar’s Popeye the Sailor is one of the classic comic characters of the century and an enduring favorite for nearly 70 years. The crusty sailor with the outsized forearms and taste for spinach first appeared in Segar’s Thimble Theatre newspaper strip, along with his familiar cast of characters including his sweetheart Olive Oyl, nemesis Bluto, sidekick Wimpy and many others. Popeye has appeared in comic books since 1937 and his adventures have been carried in titles published by David McKey, Dell, King, Charlton, Gold Key, Whitman, and Ocean. The template for Popeye’s success—a goofy blend of humor and adventure, fuelled by unforgettable characters and bizarre dialogue—is almost failure-proof, and comic publishers have been using it to delight young fans down to the present day.
