The New Gods—Orion, Lightray, Mister Miracle, and company—have been major players in the DC Universe since the early 1970s, when the legendary Jack Kirby (Fantastic Four, Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen) unleashed them on unsuspecting comic book readers.

Following on the heels of writer/artist John Byrne’s excellent twenty-issue Fourth World (Jack Kirby’s…) series, writer/artist Walter Simonson launched Orion. It focuses more particularly on the adventures of the alleged son of Darkseid, the despotic ruler of Apokolips whose pursuit of the ultimate power—the Anti-Life Equation—continues in this series and brings him into conflict with the title character, the greatest warrior of New Genesis. Simonson’s work here matches the greatness of his run on Thor in the 1980s. Readers are not only treated to this comics industry legend’s exquisite pencils and inks on the main feature, but also the gorgeous line work of such luminaries as Frank Miller (Batman: The Dark Knight, 300) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Give Me Liberty) on the “Tales of the New Gods” backup feature.
