Middle Class Fantasies

    (Cartoonists Co-Op, 1973, 1976)
™ and ©1973 Jerry Lane

The cover illustrations display Jerry Lane’s clean art style, which masks a quirky mind very much rooted in the past. The exception is his “Frogman” strip in both issues, which would have been very much at home in early 1980s issues of Heavy Metal with the silent frogman of the title floating through the air and the issues. The first issue also has a long Marx Brothers homage and a bizarre George Reeves story, while the meat of the second issue is provided by a prom night story set in the 1960s and a funny animal western. Lane’s strips’ reliance on cultural touchstones should provide an appeal beyond a lot of underground titles, but be warned the come-hither title hardly reflects the content.
