Tomato is a collection of stories from Seattle comic artist Ellen Forney. The first issues begins with a rather shocking intro piece illustrating creative uses for a ketchup bottle. From there, it swings into “Birdie & Spike in…After Hours,” wherein Birdie agrees to pose for Wendy’s camera in a series of erotic shots. The third story, “I was 7 in ’75,” recalls the wild parties that the Forney household threw in the ’70s, including the weirdly themed “Potty Party.”

As amusing as these sex and drugs free-for-alls seemed to have been, the standout in Tomato is probably the final story, “My Date With Camille Paglia.” There, Ellen tries to set up an interview with the noted “outlaw feminist” but is turned away. At the same time, Paglia asks whether Forney is really asking for a date, suggesting that her response would be very different if that were the case. The date never materialized, but the miscommunications leading up to the non-event make for a lively story.
