The Shadow of the Torturer (Gene Wolfe’s…)
(Innovation, 1991-1992)
™ and ©1980 Gene Wolfe. Adaptation/art ©1991 Innovative Corp.
This six issue mini-series from Innovation adapts Gene Wolfe’s dark 1980 novel by the same name. It’s set sometime in the future, when man has entered into a new dark ages, far worse than the first ones. The world of that age had become a necropolis—a city of the dead.
The story follows Severian, a young man who was grown from early childhood to become a torturer. In this necropolis, torturing had become a guild profession, and was studied as avidly as a priest studies religion. Severian was no different in his devotion to this profession—until he met a strange man named Vodallus who gave him a coin—and began his transformation into a new man.
