The trouble began in Wallace Harbour on Stewart Island, a tiny waystation in the southern part of New Zealand. Despite the seafarers who rode in, Wallace Harbour had been a quiet place—at least until recently. There was a murderer running loose in the town, killing at random and mutilating the bodies beyond recognition.

Sergeant Rowan of the New Zealand Police had been diligently investigating the crimes. Still, he couldn’t have guessed that the killer he stalked was no man—it was more of a virus that possessed the bodies of humans, transforming them into something…not quite human. It was they who had been doing the killing…and they would kill again and again until they were stopped. For what was mere human life to an alien predator?
