Vaughn Bodē: Rare and Well Done
(Pure Imagination, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Mark Bode
In his introduction to this art book, artist Greg Theakston mentions that “lots of people never heard of Vaughn Bode.” Almost to confirm this statement, the book’s front cover misspells Vaughn in the title, even though his signature adorns the accompanying artwork. Readers can become acquainted with Bode’s bold, cartoony art in 112 pages of science fiction and fantasy pieces he created for various magazines and convention program books. His thick linework and outrageous concepts marked Bode as an artist with an original style who tragically died before his time. Essays from friends Ted White and Theakston give insight into the eccentric personality who made his mark in sci-fi and underground comix of the 1960s and considered himself a perverted Walt Disney.
