X-Men: Days of Future Past
(Marvel, 2004, 2011, 2014)
™ and © 2004 Marvel Entertainment Group
Mere months after masterminding the vaunted “Dark Phoenix Saga,” the legendary teaming of Claremont and Byrne did the improbable by producing yet another timeless classic. Originally published in X-Men #141 (Jan 81) and Uncanny X-Men #142 (Feb 81), the quickly paced “Days of Future Past” tells of a time in the near future when the assassination of a mutant-hating senator by the new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants inspires a campaign by the government to reactivate the dreaded Sentinels. Programmed to destroy all mutants, the Sentinels, in the best tradition of sentient robots gone wrong, scheme to take over the world.
“Days,” if written today, would surely fill this entire trade paperback, but a mere two issues were all Byrne and Claremont needed to produce an eminently satisfying, epic-scale yarn that bursts at the seams with colorful storytelling, exciting action, and rich characterizations in the best Stan Lee-Jack Kirby tradition.
Rounding out this collection are X-Men (1st series), Uncanny X-Men #143 (an expertly told tale of a wide-eyed, terrified Kitty Pryde), and Annual #4. It’s all good.
— Brett Weiss
