Coo Coo Comics

    (Animated, 1942-1952)
™ and ©1947 by Animated Cartoons, Inc.

Coo Coo Comics was the first funny animal comic to hit on an obvious and entertaining comic combination: funny animals and super heroes. Super Mouse debuted in Coo Coo Comics #1 and entertained readers as the lead story for almost the entire ten-year run of the title. Backing up this super powered rodent are Tuffy, a tom cat with a resemblance to Warner Brothers’ famous feline Sylvester; Dodger, a “squoil” from Brooklyn; Samuel Spaniel, a goofy pooch; and Bruno Bear, a slow-witted country bumpkin with a taste for honey.

Also featured in each issue are several text-only stories of about a page each, with a single spot illustration across the top. These illustrations, especially in the middle issues, were likely the (very early) work of Frank Frazetta, the acclaimed fantasy artist.
