The Phantom has many names: Protector. Friend. The Ghost Who Walks. In addition to his more than 70 years in the newspapers, for more than 40 years, he has appeared in comic books from Marvel, DC, King, Gold Key, and Charlton. The Phantom movie and serial continue to thrill audiences. But it is those daily and Sunday comic strip appearances that feed his worldwide legion of fans. Sunday strip artist Graham Nolan carries on the grand tradition of artists like Ray Moore, Sy Barry, and Fred Fredericks. Volume One collects four complete story lines, “The War Mongers,” “The Briefcase,” “Terror in Mawitaan,” and “The Sinbad Stone.” “The Sinbad Stone” pays tribute to the writers and their influences. Mr. Gutman from The Maltese Falcon inspired Mr. Chubb, and Mr. DePaul comes from the writer, Tony DePaul! Great stories, great art. The only problem with the book is that stories one and four are jumbled, a minor production glitch that does nothing to lessen the quality of the art or look of the book. Long live the Phantom!
