“What becomes of a man who spends his life in the underworld for a love that lasts beyond the grave?” asks the back-cover copy of Seimaden. “Nothing very interesting,” is, sadly, the answer. In some vague medieval fantasy world, amnesiac bar dancer Hildegarde is protected from overeager admirers by the sinister Laures. Centuries ago, he became the prince of the damned (unfortunately getting stuck with a pair of those batwing head handles) to save her life.

He’s waited all this time for her to be reincarnated so he could collect her body and soul, but, then, the blonde Roddrick, with mysterious powers of his own, enters the picture claiming to be Hildy’s old lover.

As battles between good and evil go, this one’s pretty muddy, since Roddrick is uninteresting and Hildy is hardly a frightened virgin desperately waiting to be picked up by either of them. (“I’m not a lady,” she tells Laures, punctuating that, well, she dances in bars.) And, though theoretically pining for his true love, Laures sleeps with whoever’s handy.
