Druggist Bob Benton accidentally discovered a chemical compound which gave him incredible strength, and so, in the manner of all good Golden Age citizens who made such discoveries, took to the streets in a black jumpsuit and mask to fight crime under the name of the Black Terror. The skull and crossbones on his chest, reminiscent of the much later character The Punisher, gave the Terror that little extra something that made his book stand out on the racks.

The Black Terror was created by Richard Hughes and David Gabrielsen, and made his first appearance in Exciting Comics #9 in 1941. He soon graduated to his own title, which ran through 1949. Black Terror was the most popular character in the Better Publications stable, and anchored a team-up book (America’s Best Comics) with the label’s other stars Fighting Yank, Dr. Strange (not the Marvel character), and Captain Future.
