The Second Stage Turbine Blade
(Evil Ink, 2004-2005)
™ and © Evil Ink
This comic book—based on the lyrics of a band called Coheed and Cambria—opens up well enough: two children are warned to mind their p’s and q’s, references are made to a murder, and a mystery is established. Well and good, but then, the book becomes a convoluted endeavor involving three species—Man, Prise, and Mage—that were created by God to live in perfect harmony. The conflict is unclear as the writer and the artist make a concerted effort to stay intentionally unclear. It’s obvious that something pretty lofty is a threat to the entire universe, but veiling the conflict in roundabout language does little to draw a reader in and hold his or her attention. The artwork, while simplistic, is quite good—a blocky sort of illustration that owes something to Bruce Timm and his work on the various Batman and Justice League animated series.
