Batman & Superman Adventures: World’s Finest

™ and ©1997 DC Comics

When the animated Batman series moved from Fox to the WB Network and became half of “The New Batman/Superman Adventures,” the first order of business was a team-up in the tradition of World’s Finest Comics; this Prestige Format one-shot adapts that three-part story in comic book form. The action begins when the Joker and his partner, Harley Quinn, steal a “jade” dragon from antiques dealer and head to Metropolis. After analyzing a forgotten sliver of the purloined sculpture and determining that the Clown Prince of Crime has actually made off with twenty pounds of Kryptonite, the Dark Knight, too, makes tracks for Superman’s city, where the Joker has struck a deal with the nefarious Lex Luthor: one billion dollars for the murder of the Man of Steel.

Mirroring the uneasy relationship between Superman and Batman in the mainstream DC Universe, this team-up stresses the differences in the heroes’ methodologies and defines any partnership as reluctant at best. Oh, and Lois Lane starts dating Bruce Wayne as well, something sure to not help the relationship between the super-heroes.
